Dentists volunteer to help in care homes

Dentists have volunteered to help the fight against COVID-19 in our care homes.

Given their detailed knowledge of infection control procedures, primary care dentists are well placed to assist and support the Trust teams in their efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 within the care home sector.

80 dentists have recently completed training and are expected to be mobilised next week to help infection prevention and control nursing teams right across Northern Ireland.

In preparing for this role, these volunteer dentists have attended infection prevention and control training recently delivered by the Clinical Education Centre.

The Public Health Agency (PHA) Health Surveillance Team will continue to support the care home sector as normal, through the PHA Duty Room, but it is hoped that these volunteer dentists will provide a valuable additional resource to help augment this support as required.

The dentists will continue to have work commitments within their own dental practices, however, they have each offered to provide between two to six half day sessions per week to assist in the care home sector.
