An encompass / Care Network workshop was held on 13 February 2020, attended by over 240 HSC staff involved in Regional Care Networks.

The workshop’s purpose was to explain the role of Subject Matter Experts in the design and configuration of the system with preferred supplier Epic demonstrating a typical workflow walkthrough session, focusing on the decision points required by HSC NI Subject Matter Experts.

Subject Matter Experts will be decision making Health and Social Care professionals, they already exist in all operational areas of our service, and in some cases they are already providing oversight of standardisation, best practice and decision making on behalf of the professionals they represent.

Gary Loughran, Director of encompass, focused on the requirement for Subject Matter Experts to feel empowered by HSC NI to undertake high velocity, high volume decision making.

“By participating in system design and configuration Subject Matter Experts will ensure the foundation build is tailored to Northern Ireland’s specifications,” he said.

The demonstration by Epic was followed by structured discussions to find out if the Care Networks in attendance are warranted to provide the input required in designing the final solution for HSC NI.

While attendees noted the good work undertaken by encompass in compiling the list of Regional Care Networks represented, it was acknowledged it is the responsibility of all attendees to work with encompass to highlight any Regional Care Networks that have not been identified to date.

Diane Walker, Palliative Care in Partnership Programme Manager commented: “An informative and thought provoking event which gave the Palliative Care in Partnership Programme the opportunity to better understand how our members can contribute and be prepared to make decisions which can inform how encompass is designed to best meet the needs of palliative and end of life care patients and the wide range of clinicians who care for them.”

encompass is a HSC-wide initiative to introduce a digital integrated care record to Northern Ireland, which will replace, modernise and consolidate many of HSC’s fragmented and isolated systems.
