Community pharmacies play an important role, not only in the supply and dispensing of medicines, but increasingly in providing a first point of contact across the health service. As society ages, health and social care services, including community pharmacies, face huge and growing challenges to meet demand. In this context, the location and distribution of pharmacies to meet the needs of local communities is of crucial importance.
Through the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA), we have carried out an assessment of the current need for pharmaceutical services versus the current levels of community pharmacy service provision across Northern Ireland. This involved the development of a tool that can be used to assess need and provision of pharmaceutical services in defined localities, as well as facilitating benchmarking analysis.
Having listened to this feedback and used it to inform the development of the PNA, we now want to know if we have measured these factors correctly and are therefore keen to hear your views.

In order to measure need for pharmaceutical services in Northern Ireland, a series of indices have been developed: a population index; an age-sex index; an additional needs index; and a total needs index. A file presenting data for each index at Super Output Area level can be accessed via the following link https://hscbusiness.hscni.net/services/3183.htm
